Cognitive Translation Of English Long Sentence Into Chinese

This translation report is based on the translation practice of The Digital Environment:How We Live,Learn,Work,and Play Now from English to Chinese translation.The book is written by Pablo Boczkowski and Eugenia Mitchelstein and published by MIT Press in 2021,which covers how we should take control of our life,study,work and play in an increasingly digital age.There are many complex and long sentences in the source text of the translation project,which belongs to the information text.Cognitive translation focuses on the translation process and pays attention to the transformation process of translation activities in the translator’s brain.It has more and more attention from scholars in recent years.This study is based on long sentences from The Digital Environment:How We Live,Learn,Work,and Play Now.From the perspective of Langacker’s action chain,this study classifies long sentences into "single-force-flow"and "multiple-force-flow",and explores the cognitive process and translation methods of long sentences.The study found that the single-force-flow type can be subdivided into simple pattern and complex pattern,and the multiple-force-flow type can be subdivided into parallel pattern and recursive pattern,and the cognitive difficulties of long sentences mainly lie in the difficult transfer relationship in the force flow,the complex relationships of components in the action chain,and the difference between English and Chinese language use preferences.The cognition of long sentences can be analyzed and processed based on the model of "agent+action+patient" by clarifying the force flow relationship in the process of force transmission,dividing the independent action chain structure and conforming to the Chinese usage preference.The translation method of long sentences can be carried out by cutting,integrating and conforming.This paper adopts a qualitative method to analyze long sentences,studies the cognitive process of translating long sentences into Chinese from the perspective of force flow,and proposes specific methods for translating long sentences into Chinese.It innovates research methods for translating English long sentences into Chinese.
