Since the 21 st century,autonomous learning theory has become a hot topic in the field of foreign language teaching in China.The English Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education(2022)puts forward the requirements of cultivating the English autonomous learning ability of junior high school students.Junior high school period is the critical period at which the students will develop their autonomous learning ability.However,the domestic studies on English autonomous learning mainly focus on college students and senior high school students,and there are few studies on English autonomous learning of junior high school students.Therefore,this study is aimed at investigating the current situation of English autonomous learning of junior high school students.This thesis analyzes the current situation of English autonomous learning of junior high school students from seven dimensions,including learning motivation,learning contents,learning time,learning strategies,learning process,learning results,and learning environment.This study aims to answer the following two questions:(1)What is the overall situation of junior high school students’ English autonomous learning? How does it perform in the seven dimensions?(2)Are there any differences between boys and girls in English autonomous learning? If yes,in what dimensions?This study adopts quantitative and qualitative research methods to investigate163 junior high school students in the X Junior High School in Zhanjiang city.The research instruments include questionnaire and interview.After the data collection,the questionnaire data were analyzed with SPSS26.Combined with the interview results,the following conclusions are reached:(1)In general,junior high school students’ English autonomous learning is at the medium level.Among the seven dimensions,learning environment is at the highest level,while learning motivation and learning strategies are at the relatively low level.(2)There are significant differences between boys and girls in English autonomous learning.Girls do better in English autonomous learning than boys,especially in the dimensions of learning motivation,learning time and learning results.Based on the above research results,the author puts forward some suggestions on the improvement of the current situation.Suggestions mainly include:(1)Promoting students’ ability in learning strategies;(2)Inspiring students’ learning motivations;(3)Conducting cooperative learning and narrowing the gap between boys and girls.
