This thesis applies a research method that combines questionnaires and semistructured interviews to study the English learning of junior high school students from three aspects: the use of motivational regulation strategy(hereinafter referred to as MRS),the level of autonomous learning ability(hereinafter referred to as ALA)and the correlation between MRS use and ALA.The aim is to explore ways to improve ALA by increasing the use of MRS for junior high school students.The findings of the research are summarized as follows:Firstly,the overall use of MRS by junior high school students is at a medium level.self-efficacy enhancement is the most frequently used strategy while task value enhancement is the least frequently used strategy.Secondly,junior high school students have a high and medium level of ALA in English learning.The most frequently used means among five abilities is learning motivation.The least frequently used means is extracurricular resources.Thirdly,there exists a significant positive correlation between junior high school students’ MRS and ALA in English learning.The correlation between the eight MRSs and ALA implies that task-value enhancement strategy is most strongly correlated with ALA while volitional control strategy has the lowest correlation with ALA.This thesis puts forward the following suggestions based on the above research findings: On the one hand,teachers should act as helpers and mentors to stimulate and direct students to use various strategies to regulate their learning motivation.On the other hand,teachers should prompt students to put their ALA into action,especially to strengthen the use of task-based enhancement strategy in order to enhance their ALA.This study helps teachers guide students to establish a correct view of English learning and to enhance their ALA by stimulating learning motivation so as to get better learning effect.
