Wang Shishen was a famous calligrapher,painter,seal cutter,and poet active in Yangzhou during the Kangqian period of the Qing Dynasty.As an all-rounder in poetry,calligraphy,painting,and printing,he has a wealth of knowledge and extensive experience.His literary and moral qualities have been widely praised by contemporary people,and he has been listed as one of the "Eight Outlaws of Yangzhou".Wang Shishen’s calligraphy is not influenced by traditional calligraphy,and he has the courage to break the stereotypes.He has the courage to innovate in his creation,and actively draws closer to stele learning.This has made him a master of learning from Han steles.Wang’s calligraphy reflected his superb techniques and unique and innovative characteristics.This article collects Wang Shishen’s works,poems,and postscripts on calligraphy,as well as others’ evaluations of his calligraphy.This paper conducts a comprehensive and detailed study of Wang Shishen’s calligraphy from five aspects:his life and friendship,calligraphy art,seal cutting art,the causes of calligraphy,and the impact of calligraphy art.The first chapter introduces Wang Shishen’s life experience and friends.From his repeated failures in his youth to the hardships of his parents’ death,he became discouraged and moved to Yangzhou,where he began his career as an artist.During his stay in Yangzhou,he made many close friends,such as the brothers Jin Nong,Gao Xiang,and Ma.His communication with these people had a subtle impact on Wang Shishen’s aesthetic concepts of calligraphy,and had a certain impact on the formation of his calligraphy style in the future.The second chapter focuses on Wang Shishen’s calligraphy art,which is divided into two sections.The first section analyzes Wang’s official script couplets and vertical axis works from the perspective of calligraphy aesthetics,explores the source of their official script teachers’ inheritance and learning methods,and gradually analyzes Wang’s official script aesthetic thoughts and learning attitudes.The second section studies the technical features of Wang Shishen’s cursive script.By selecting some representative works of Wang Shishen’s cursive script,it analyzes and discusses the images from three levels:pen use,structure,and composition,to reproduce the artistic characteristics and formal beauty of his elegant and elegant cursive script.The third chapter analyzes Wang Shishen’s artistic of seal cutting.Wang Shishen’s seal cutting mostly adopts the small seal,often imitating the ancient seals of the Qin and Han dynasties.The blade technique is stable,the lines are simple and clumsy,and has a strong aura of gold and stone and a sense of ancient vicissitudes.Through collecting and sorting out Wang Shishen’s seals,the author briefly appreciates their white and Zhu seals,and summarizes Wang’s seal cutting techniques and creative ideas.The fourth chapter introduces the reasons for the formation of Wang Shishen’s calligraphy style.The author makes a detailed explanation of the causes of Wang Shishen’s calligraphy characteristics from three aspects: the envelopment of the calligraphy style in the early Qing Dynasty,the influence of Zen culture,and the integration of poetry,calligraphy,and painting,hoping to grasp Wang’s calligraphy characteristics more accurately and objectively on the whole.The fifth chapter expounds the influence of Wang Shishen’s calligraphy.His tireless pursuit of calligraphy not only promoted the development of stele studies in the early Qing Dynasty,but also had certain guiding significance for later scholars of calligraphy. |
