Translation and Multimodality:Beyond Words was first published in 2020 by Routledge.This book collects the academic achievements of world-class experts in the field of translation theory and multimodal research and explores the important links between these interrelated but distinct disciplines.This report is based on translation of Chapter three"Meaning-(Re)Making in a Word of Untranslated Signs:Towards a Research Agenda on Multimodality,Culture and Translation"and Chapter four"From The "Cinema of Attractions" to Danmu:A Multimodal-Theory Analysis of Changing Subtitling Aesthetics Across Media Cultures",with over 17,000 words in total.The language of the book is characterized by the use of a large number of technical terms,abstract and rigorous concepts as well as long sentences which are difficult to understand.Based on the principles of faithfulness and smoothness,and with reference to Newmark’s functional text typology and communicative translation,this report discusses translation examples in terms of two aspects of the translation process:accuracy of comprehension and fluency of expression.The translation examples illustrate how to achieve accurate comprehension at the word and sentence levels,as well as how to enhance brevity,naturalness,and coherence in the expression.It is concluded that accuracy of comprehension and smoothness of expression are crucial for the translation of academic theses.It is hoped that this report might be of some help to the translation of academic texts.
