Abstract/Summary:
As a major archaeological discovery, the underwater relics of Fuxian Lake in Yunnan Province still remain a lot of unsolved mysteries.Underwater exploration of the underwater relics was once a sensation, but now people know little about it.However, under the background that the 15 th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity(COP 15)was successfully held in Kunming,Yunnan Province, people from all walks of life have paid more and more attention to Yunnan’s cultural scenery, landscape wonders and ethnic customs. This is a good opportunity to spread Yunnan culture and popularize Yunnan’s history. Therefore, the author of this report chose the book Exploring the Ancient City under the Fuxian Lake(Excerpts)as the source text.On the basis of a large number of investigation materials, the author of this book shows the readers the mysterious underwater world of Fuxian Lake through the introduction of the underwater investigation activities of Fuxian Lake, which has high academic value. The in-depth study and scientific exploration of many artificial relics at the bottom of the lake reveal another form of ancient civilization in Yunnan, trying to prove the developed degree of ancient Yunnan civilization and the authenticity of human community activities in Fuxian Lake area.Translating this text has great practical significance and is conducive to the spread of Fuxian Lake culture. This report is one about the translation practice from Chinese to English. As the source text belongs to the genre of archaeology and popular science, documentary and intuition are the common features of writing language, but there are many prose descriptions in the text, and rhetorical devices such as metaphor, personification and synaesthesia are used.Multiple loose sentences, repeated sentences and no subject sentences. There are many quotations from ancient books and poems, and the sentence patterns are antithetical and rhetorical. There are many professional words and expressions involved in archaeology, and a lot of relevant materials need to be consulted. In many places, description is emphasized over intuition, and abstraction over concreteness.Under the guidance of translation norms theory, the translator summed up some strategies suitable for this kind of text translation, such as adding and omitting, combining literal translation with free translation, adding and changing subjects, changing parts of speech, segmenting complex sentences according to meaning groups and reintegrating them, and combining Chinese and English rhetorical devices to strive for the equivalence of sentence patterns and meanings, taking into account readability and accuracy. In the process of translation, the translator improves her translation level and enriches the translation knowledge. At the same time, the translator also realizes that the guidance of translation theory to translation practice can not be ignored. The translator hopes to spread the culture of Fuxian Lake slightly by translating Exploring the Ancient City under the Fuxian Lake, which will attract more researchers’ attention and attract more tourists to appreciate the scenery of Yunnan. At the same time,in future translation practice, the translator will pay more attention to the choice and use of words, and enhance the "sensitivity" of translation in order to translate better works.
