Abstract/Summary:
Under the increasingly tense international situation,it is necessary for China to know the economic, political, and cultural background of other countries to better maintain its advantages in the torrent of the times.Knowing America is regarded as the top priority, which includes the more attention to the translation of American literature. The translation material of this report is selected from the autobiographical novel Somebody’s Daughter by Ashley·C·Ford, telling the writer’s life from childhood to the present. She tried to connect her life experience with the living situation of African-American women and expressed her cultural and political demands. The author selects parts of Chapters 26-30 of Somebody’s Daughter as the original material, analyzes the application of Toury’s theory of translation norms to E-C translation of autobiographical text.Firstly, the translation material is selected by the translator under the constraints of preliminary norms, which is influenced by translation policy and directness of translation;Subsequently, the translator prefers to localize the translation under the guidance of the initial norms, that is,a lot of efforts are put into the“acceptability” of the translation to maximize readers’ understanding of the translation; Finally, the translator analyzes the guiding significance of the operational norms for this translation in detail from levels of lexicon, syntax and discourse, and puts forward corresponding translation strategies for each level, such as addition, omission, conversion of part-of-speech,the use of four-character structures, division, combination and so on.In conclusion, this paper aims at further studying Toury’s theory of translation norms and improving its applicability in autobiographical text translation. It is expected to provide new ideas and inspiration for translators engaged in autobiographical text translation in the future, and promote the study of autobiographical literature of African Americans in China.
