“The Neapolitan Novels”,consisting of L’amica geniale,Storia Del nuovo cognome,Storia di chifugge e chi resta and Storia della bambina perduta,are the masterpieces of the Italian anonymous author Elena Ferrante.The series of novels based on the friendship that spans more than half a century between two girls living in the slums of Naples.“The Neapolitan Novels” depicts the real life of the lower class in Naples,and exposes their miserable life and spiritual distress.The existing studies on“The Neapolitan Novels” both domestic and international,have mainly focused on feminist studies,with little attention to the lower class.In light of this,this thesis focuses on “lower class”,attempting to comprehensively analyze the various aspects of the lower class depicted in novels,exploring Ferrante’s concern for and reflection on the lower class,and revealing the tragic lives of lower class.The thesis consists of three parts: Introduction,main body and Conclusion.Introduction mainly introduces the Ferrante and her works,then summarizes domestic and foreign studies on “The Neapolitan Novels”,and finally explains the research methods and research ideas used in this thesis.The main body of the thesis is divided into three chapters to discuss the bottom writing in “The Neapolitan Novels”.Chapter One is the reasons of the bottom writing.It analyzes the reasons why Elena Ferrante pays attention to the plight of the people at the bottom and writes about the bottom in detail from two aspects: the inheritance and development of Italian verism and neorealism,and the Ferrante’s own consciousness of the bottom.Chapter Two is the manifestation of the bottom writing.It makes an in-depth analysis of the bottom characters,the ethical relations at the bottom and the spatial environment at the bottom,exposes the miserable life of the people at the bottom under the double oppression of material and spirit,and criticizes the unreasonable social system with many contradictions in Italy.Chapter Three is the significance of the bottom writing.It analyzes the significance and value of Ferrante’s writing from the aspects of selfidentity construction,the reflection and criticism of social status and the ultimate philosophical thinking of human destiny.Conclusion summarizes the research of this thesis and connects Elena Ferrante’s bottom writing with reality,providing a profound interpretation of Ferrante’s concerns for the real society through the bottom writing in the Neapolitan Novels.Ferrante starts from her own life experience and feelings with the unique feeling of compassion of intellectuals to care for the suffering life at the bottom and to face up to the unreasonable social reality.Her bottom writing shows the spiritual responsibility of facing the reality.This thesis compares the four novels from the perspective of bottom literature based on Ferrante’s lower class consciousness,conducting an in-depth analysis and comparison of group images,social environments,and ideological differences,which helps to explore the unique spiritual value of the Neapolitan Novels and adds new perspectives to the study of bottom literature. |
