The competitions between China and the United States in various fields are increasingly fierce,and the bilateral relations between the two countries are also facing unprecedented challenges.Thus,the domestic people follow news on America closely,including its relationship with China and its social problems.The translation of western media reports on US-related events will help Chinese readers portray a clearer image of the US and the bilateral relations.Due to the differences in social values and systems,however,China and the West cannot reach a consensus on certain issues.Therefore,it is of great significance for translators to deliver appropriate translations of western political news that are conforming to Chinese ideology to domestic readers.Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis model is widely applied in the news discourse analysis to discover the hidden ideological factors and value orientation.This report analyzes the translation of America-related political news reports that were finished during the author’s internship at China Daily within the framework of Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis approach to investigate the translation strategies that the editor of China Daily used and the covered ideological factors that influence his translation to provide implications for further political news translation.The report finds that ideologies influence greatly China Daily’s translation of political news on America.For discourse antagonistic to China’s ideologies in foreign news,the editor of China Daily uses various strategies to avoid the Chinese readers being impacted by faulty judgments and cognitions and help them to interpret America’s politics and Chinese stances with a more comprehensive lens.Strategies employed by the editor Wang include the adjustments of positive and negative judgments of China and America,sensitive information,personal pronouns,affirmative and negative expressions,news sources and so on in the source text and sometimes the news titles were rewritten for ideological factors. |
