China Daily,one of the six key media sites of China,is known by its website of Chinese online edition which provides Chinese readers with a large number of deeply-reported events about the globe.However,limited by both the timeliness of news report and the translators’ abilities,translations of international news events vary greatly.According to Verschueren’s Pragmatic Perspective on Language,Adaption Theory is used to discuss the usage of language in terms of cognition,society and culture.Based on Adaption Theory and political news adopted from Chinese online edition of China Daily,the thesis aims at discussing the features of English political news translation with specific analysis of good or bad translation to help the writer and other news translators to do well in the spread of political news.First,the author discusses the linguistic characteristics of English political news translation from the perspective of lexical,syntactic,rhetoric and discourse levels.For example,long complicated sentences are widely used in English while reduplicated words,four-character phrases and metaphor are widely used in Chinese.In translation,translator can motivate beyond the syntax of English,and thus try to make the syntax simpler and the key points obvious.Second,the author discusses the feature of cultural context of English political news translation from the perspective of social and political systems,ways of thinking and different cultural psychologies,for example,Chinese people are more inclined to way of subjective thinking while English people are more to way of objective thinking.Therefore in translation some passive syntax in English shall be turned into active syntax in Chinese.The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the linguistic and cultural features of English political news translation from the perspective of Adaption Theory by analyzing good and bad translations and to help news translators to learn about its features and the way to translate well to fulfill their mission.At the same time,this thesis provides experience and reference for other translation research. |
