An E-C Translation Report On Financial News From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

Financial news promotes economic exchanges at home and abroad.As international trades dominate every country’s economic life,Chinese people is in an urgent need to be informed about the latest foreign financial news.Hence,translators are required to assume the responsibility for introducing newest economic dynamics to businessmen,financial practitioners and financial enthusiasts.Guided by communication translation theory,this translation report analyzes the obstacles and problems encountered in the translation practice,and concludes some effective translation methods and translation techniques that can be used in the future.Newmark stresses that translated text ought to be reader-oriented and regards accuracy and readability as its core.Moreover,he classifies texts into three categories on the basis of their functions,namely expressive text,informative text and vocative text,and believes that communicative translation theory should be used to guide informative and vocative texts.In this translation report,the author makes case analysis of financial news she translated during her internship at China Daily,and all these selected news articles are the informative texts.Hence,the author opts for communicative translation theory to guide her report.Consisting of five chapters,this report will introduce the concept and features of financial news,and elaborate communicative translation’s theoretical basis,definition,features,principles and applications to financial news.As for case analysis,communicative translation is used as its theoretical guidance and it is found that translation methods and techniques from the translation practices,such as addition,omission,division,combination and shift are effective and practical.This report concludes that at the lexical level,when translating technical terms,translators should look them up in professional dictionaries and use their standard translation.For sub-technical terms,culture-loaded words and neologism,the context and cultural background of original texts should be fully considered,and if necessary,free translation should be used.At the syntactic level,translators should clarify sentence structure and its logic first,and then add or delete some information by addition and omission,and render long and complex sentences by splitting,combining or shifting.Besides,translators are expected to adopt Chinese passive sentences,Chinese active sentences or Chinese sentences without subjects to translate English passive sentences.
