E-C Translation Report On COVID-19 News From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This report puts functionalist skopos theory into E-C translation of COVID-19 news and analyzes the application of the theory from perspectives of intertextual and intratextual coherence based on the texts accumulated during the author’s translation internship.Since the end of 2019 when the first COVID-19 case was confirmed,news about the disease has gradually made headlines in English newspapers across the world.COVID-19 has profoundly affected people’s daily lives,and the future of mankind is more widely shared than ever.At this critical moment when the virus sees a resurgence in China,translating global English news reports on the pandemic is the slightest contribution the author can do to eliminating language barriers for readers of Chinese.This report consists of five chapters.Chapter Ⅰ introduces related studies.Chapter Ⅱ introduces the task.Chapter Ⅲ is an overview of skopos theory and gives a translation brief for this translation project in the light of lessons learnt from previous studies.Chapter Ⅳ falls into two parts.In 4.1,translators’ basic translation capacities of diction,collocation and sentence translation are demonstrated from the perspective of intertextual coherence;in 4.2,the author focuses on intratextual coherence by illustrating the employment of more advanced E-C translation techniques including translating into four-character Chinese idioms,conversion,splitting,division and restructuring,etc.Chapter Ⅴ is the conclusion of this report.This report argues that within the framework of skopos theory,COVID-19 news is of informative function primarily.The primary purpose of the author’s overall translational action is to convey information on the global pandemic to readers of Chinese,and the application of intratextual and intertextual coherence serves that purpose.Under the framework of textual coherence,skilled employment of translation techniques provides an appropriate interpretation of skopos theory.Of course,translation quality should not be judged only by the implement of translation skills.It should be a reflection of a translator’s comprehensive capabilities as a professional in the translation field.
