A Report On The Translation Of 2019 Shell Annual Report(Chapter 4)

The annual report of a petroleum company not merely introduces the management,operation and financial condition of an oil company.Moreover,it is helpful for investors to know about the development of a company.Therefore,the accurate translation of the annual report is of great significance.The text of translation practice report is selected from 2019 Shell Annual Report,which is composed of five chapters.The fourth chapter of the source text aims to introduce the financial data of a company in detail.Through the analysis of the source text,the translator finds that the text of petroleum annual report has its own characteristics in terms of vocabulary,syntax and discourse.It is noted that this type of text is characterized by professional expression,formal language,which poses huge challenges to the translator.Based on the classification of linguistic functions,Newmark divided text types into three categories:expressive function,informative function,and vocative function.It is judged that this selected text belongs to an informative text,and the main purpose is to present the content and convey the information.Therefore,under the guidance of Newmark’s Text typology theory,the translator uses case analysis to explore the translation methods and techniques of this text.At the lexical level,this report introduces the accuracy of terminologies,integrity of abbreviations and conversion of words.At the syntactic level,it involves the voice conversion,semantic simplification and the parentheses restructure.At the discourse level,reproduction of logical relation and cohesion of context are used to ensure the fluency of the text.It is hoped that this translation practice report can provide reference for the translation of similar texts.
