A Mock Simultaneous Interpreting Report(E-C) Of An Online Lecture On Tiffany’s Silver

With increasingly frequent international exchanges,the Chinese market has evolved from a simple trading venue to an important place for cultural and artistic exchanges.According to the 2021 China Luxury Market Report released by strategic consulting firm Bain & Company,China’s domestic luxury market is expected to become the world’s largest luxury market by 2025 and foreign luxury brands will step up efforts to enhance their brand culture among China’s rich and middle-income groups.As an internationally famous jewelry & watch brand born in New York,Tiffany & Co.is rich in culture with a history of nearly two centuries.This is an English-Chinese simulated practice report based on a lecture given by Doctor Debra Schmidt Bach with the New York Historical Society on Tiffany silver.The lecture is entitled “Inside the Turquoise Box: Tiffany Silver at the New York Historical Society”.The lecture lasts 59 minutes and 33 seconds and it will focus on Tiffany & Co’s stories,silver-related stories,and primary silver manufacturing techniques.Through task description,the background,features,and difficulties of the task are introduced and the interpreting process is also presented including pre-interpreting preparations,implementation of the task,and post-interpreting evaluation.In the case analysis,the comprehension,expression,and adaption framework proposed by Li Changshuan is taken as guidance and the analysis is conducted based on interpretive theory.“Comprehension” discusses lexical,syntactical,and discourse comprehension;“expression” discusses Europeanized Chinese and fluency;“adaption” discusses omission,simplification,and generalization.The author provides a glossary of luxury goods and silver in the appendix of this thesis for peer reference.The conclusion enumerates the difficulties and problems encountered by the interpreter as a beginner in simultaneous interpreting and puts forward improving strategies in the hope to offer some ideas for other simultaneous interpreting beginners,especially those who aspire to specialize in luxury and silver interpreting.
