A Practice Report On C-E Translation Of “Handan Profile” Column Of Handan Municipal Government Website

With the deepening of Sino-foreign cooperation and exchanges,and under the new development pattern of economic globalization and the mutual promotion of domestic and international circulation,governments at all levels in China have started to build foreign language versions of websites one after another.As a public resource,the foreign language version of government websites is an important platform for foreigners to learn about city information and government policies.This thesis is a practice report on Chinese-English translation.The author has selected the “Handan Profile” column of the Handan Municipal Government Website as the source language text to complete this translation practice report.The author uses different translation approaches and case studies to analyze the problems encountered during the translation practice.This report focuses on the translation of four-character structures,proper nouns,non-subject and long sentences on the government website.For the translation of fourcharacter structures,the author used two translation approaches,namely conversion and omission;for the translation of proper nouns,the author employed transliteration,a combination of transliteral and free translation,and a combination of transliteration and connotation.Concerning the translation of Chinese non-subject sentences,the approaches of amplification and conversion of sentence tense were employed by the author,while for the translation of Chinese long sentences,the author mainly used three translation approaches,including linear translation,division and restructuring.The significance of this translation practice is mainly as follows: Firstly,the author has provided several approaches for the translation of government website texts,especially four-character structures,proper nouns,non-subject and long sentences,which is beneficial to the author’s future translation practice.Secondly,this translation practice has also improved the author’s personal translation ability to a certain extent.Thirdly,it also provides certain corpora support for the translation of such government website texts.
