The relationship between language and culture determines that culture teaching is an essential part of English teaching.The ultimate goal of culture teaching is to cultivate learners’ intercultural communication skills in English teaching.However,intercultural communication is a two-way interactive process that requires knowledge of English culture and Chinese culture.National English Curriculum Standards for General High School(2017 Edition)also clearly states that English teaching should help students recognize,understand,and appreciate unique Chinese and foreign cultures and establish cultural confidence based on understanding cultural differences.However,in the actual teaching of English,the teaching of Chinese culture is a mere formality,and the teaching effect is not obvious.Therefore,it is necessary to investigate Chinese culture teaching in English classrooms of senior high school to understand its current situation,problems and propose countermeasures to improve Chinese culture teaching in high school English classrooms.Supported by the theory of intercultural communication and the theory of the relationship between language and culture,the researcher uses a questionnaire and a test to investigate the current situation of236 students learning Chinese culture in high school English classroom,which are from the senior class of M High School in Shihezi City;uses a questionnaire to investigate the current situation of 12 English teachers teaching Chinese culture in high school English classrooms and conducts classrooms observations of five of them to investigate the problems with the teachers’ teaching;then uses the interview method to analyze the causes of the above problems;and finally proposes corresponding countermeasures based on the research results.Based on this,this study focuses on answering the following three questions.Firstly,what is the current situation of Chinese culture teaching in High school English classrooms? Including the current situation of teachers’ teaching and students’ learning.Secondly,what are the problems of Chinese culture teaching in high school English classrooms,and what are their causes? Finally,what are the countermeasures to improve Chinese culture teaching in High school English classrooms?The results show that the current situation of Chinese culture teaching in high school English classrooms is: 1.Teachers have positive attitudes toward teaching Chinese culture in high school English classrooms,but their objective design,content choice,and methods choice of Chinese culture needs to be further improved.2.Students have positive attitudes and high expectations about learning Chinese culture in high school English classrooms,but students have fewer opportunities to learn about Chinese culture in English classrooms and cannot express Chinese culture in English.Further analysis shows that the following problems exist in Chinese culture teaching in high school English classrooms.1.For teachers,there is a mismatch between teachers’ understanding and practice of Chinese culture teaching in high school English classrooms.When designing the teaching objectives of Chinese culture,teachers emphasize cultural communication and ignore cultural learning.When choosing the content of Chinese culture,teachers emphasize English textbooks and ignore students’ needs.When choosing the teaching method of Chinese culture,teachers emphasize direct explanation and ignore cultural experience.2.For students,their awareness of Chinese culture learning in high school English classrooms still needs to be improved;students lack basic knowledge of the English language when expressing Chinese culture in English;students do not have enough input and output when learning Chinese culture.The main reasons for the above problems are: 1.From the analysis of teachers,they lack the self-awareness,knowledge and ability to teach Chinese culture.2.From the analysis of classrooms teaching,the proportion of Chinese culture in English textbooks is uneven,and classroom teaching time is tight.3.From the analysis of extracurricular factors,English tests and assignments,and after-school activities are less involved in Chinese culture.In response to the above issues,the researcher proposes specific countermeasures from the following three aspects: “English teachers,classroom teaching,extracurricular factors”.1.Teachers themselves should update their cultural teaching philosophy and focus on Chinese cultural accumulation.2.Classroom teaching should refine the teaching objectives of Chinese culture,enrich Chinese culture’s teaching methods,and evaluate Chinese culture in multiple dimensions.3.Outside of school hours,school-based materials should be developed to supplement Chinese culture learning,modern educational technology should be used to increase the time available for Chinese culture learning,and after-school activities should be conducted to enrich the ways of Chinese culture learning. |
