International appeal for renewable energy is more fervent with global warming.Wireless networks powered by renewable energy is an agreeable alternative which can reduce network operation costs and achieve energy self-sufficiency.Nevertheless,technical challenges confronting China like unstable renewable energy output in south areas and uncertain size and installation location of photovoltaic panels make it urgent to find solutions.Against this backdrop, translating communication engineering texts into Chinese has been of growing importance. Therefore, the fifth chapter of the book Green Communications for Energy-Efficient Wireless Systems is selected as the translation material. The problems during the translation process are tackled under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory.According to Newmark’s translation theory, communicative translation is applicable to informational texts. It is aimed at the target language readers and the translated text shall conform to the features of the target language,so as to reproduce in the target readers the same effect felt by the original readers. This translation practice is conducted under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory. The translation problems including nominalization, polysemy, long sentences,impersonal-subject sentences and pronoun reference have been dealt with as follows. At the lexical level, nominalized nouns are translated into verbs, which avoids redundancy of the sentence and makes the translated text clearer. In addition, mistranslation of polysemy is avoided through contextual analysis so as to communicate accurate information to the target readers. At the syntactic level, with the methods of division and restructuring of sense groups, long English sentences are divided into short ones, which are rearranged according to the logical order,so as to make the translation concise and explicit. Moreover, the English impersonal subjects are converted into personal subjects so as to make the expression more natural. At the contextual level, the pronouns are specified, thereby avoiding ambiguity. The report summarizes the typical problems during the translation process and provides the solutions accordingly with an attempt to benefit E-C translators of communication engineering texts.
