| Globalization has accelerated the rapid development of the language services industry, but translation quality assessment standards are not uniform across the industry. Therefore, the International Organization for Standardization published the ISO 17100: 2015 for the translation industry to address this situation.Translation research scholars also have focused on translation quality and introduced the concept of translation quality assessment. The report’s translation material is excerpted from the academic volume,Translation Quality Assessment: From Principles to Practice, which sorts out the theory of translation quality assessment and introduces specific methods of translation quality assessment to promote the standardization of translation quality assessment methods in the industry.Guided by House’s register analysis model, this report summarizes the difficulties encountered in the translation process and proposes appropriate solutions by comparing and analyzing the translator’s different renditions, aiming to present terminology, author’s attitude, and logic of the academic text to the reader accurately. In terms of lexical level, the translated material,as an academic text, contains a large number of terminologies and requires the reader to have the relevant expertise to fully understand the source text.Hence, the translator uses the addition technique to clarify the specific meaning of terms for the reader. At the same time,in-text notes are often used instead of footnotes to ensure the fluency of the target text.In addition, the academic text focuses on showing the author’s viewpoint by citing literature and scholars’ comments,so the translator adopts the paraphrase method to demonstrate the author’s attitude and stance and enhance the relationship building between the author and the reader. At the textual level, the author adopts the explicitation strategy to clarify the information possessed in the shell nouns based on the specific context to improve the semantic and discoursal coherence. For Chinese has the feature of parataxis, the translator omits the pronoun and noun of the English long and complex sentence to ensure the cohesion and coherence of the target text.Considering these three aspects, this translation report summarizes the appropriate translation methods and techniques through case studies and aims to provide valuable references for other translators engaged in academic text translation. |
