A Practice Report On The E-C Translation Of Where The Blue Begins (Excerpts)

As an important part in children’s growth,children’s literature has a large range of target readers beyond children.Where the Blue Begins is a novel by Christopher Morley,which has both the characteristics of children’s literature and satire novel for its literary and also humorous expressions.Therefore,the translation of Where the Blue Begins demands a guide under a comprehensive theory.Eco-translatology is a multi-disciplinary and scientific theory,which can provide a new view for the translation of children’s literature.According to Eco-translatology,translation includes two stages: adoption and selection,in which multi-dimensional transversion,especially the linguistic dimension,cultural dimension and communicative dimension,should be taken into consideration.Based on the translation cases from Where the Blue Begins guided by Eco-translatology,this report concludes the difficulties and resolutions concerning the translation of children’s literature in terms of three aspects: vocabulary,sentences and style,which can verify the applicability of this theory to children’s literature and provide reference for the translation and its study for this type of text.As a whole,in the translation of children’s literature guided by the Eco-translatology,both the foreignization and localization strategies should be used,and various methods and techniques should be applied to achieve the three-dimensional transversion.For vocabulary translation,the translator needs to take the context into consideration and select the diction which matches Chinese culture;for the translation of complex sentences,the translator should select the expressions with high readability by focusing on characteristics of target readers;and for the translation of style,the translator needs to transplant the unique style to the eco-system of target language by several techniques such as shifting the language with priority to different dimension.In the process of translating,the three-dimensional transversion often interacts with each other,so the translator should not merely focus on one dimension,but balance the characteristics of different target readers so that the communicative effect of the source texts could be planted in the culture of target language,in which the linguistic dimension works as a media.
