The International Understanding Education(IUE)has become an important part of globalization and it is the main trend of current education to cultivate international talents with global vision.English,as a course with both instrumentality and humanism,is also an important part of IUE.The integration of IUE into English courses can enhance learners’ international quality and cross-cultural awareness,but in actual teaching,the teacher is easy to ignore the penetration of cultural consciousness,is not conducive to cultivate the students’ international understanding.Therefore,it is of great significance to explore the contents of IUE in primary school textbooks.According to the classification of foreign scholars,the study divides IUE into three major themes: international issues,international culture and international connection.A total of 12 books of primary School English(New Standard)(one starting point)published by foreign Research institute are selected as the research objects.Use content analysis.Firstly,the paper analyzes the characteristics of the content of IUE in textbooks from the two dimensions of theme and grade.Secondly,it analyzes the thematic distribution and expression methods of the contents of IUE in textbooks from the three main themes.And makes an in-depth discussion with specific examples.The results show that the content of IUE in the New Standard has its characteristics and shortcomings.Its characteristics include: Firstly,the three major themes are involved,and the content focuses on international culture;Secondly,the theme presents various forms and is close to students’ daily life.Thirdly,the content focuses on the comparison between Chinese and foreign countries to promote students’ international understanding.The deficiencies are as follows: Firstly,the countries involved tend to be "big countries" and "powerful countries",which is not conducive to understanding the diversity of the world.Secondly,the content of IUE in textbooks needs to be changed.Thirdly,the content of IUE in textbooks needs to be improved.Fourthly,the level of contents of IUE in textbooks needs to be strengthened.Finally,in view of the shortcomings,the author puts forward suggestions from the three levels of curriculum standards,teaching materials and teachers: Firstly,increase the requirement of IUE in curriculum standards;Second,optimize the format in which textbooks present educational content for international understanding;Thirdly,improve teachers’ international literacy and enrich teaching practice.
