| This report is based on the translation of an excerpt of the popular science text,The Beauty of Space Art.This book is mainly compiled by Ron Miller, the executive director of the International Association of Astronomical Artists(IAAA).The book focuses on the history of astronomy and space art,as well as the various techniques and other subgenres used in presenting such artworks, which also serves as a reference book for the development of space art in China. The source text is defined as popular science related to art,and the fundamental task is to popularize scientific knowledge,so the authors strive to use simple and plain words to explain the complex and abstract content. The linguistic features of the source text are as follows: at the lexical level,it contains many terminologies related to astronomy, cosmology, art, etc.and at the syntactic level, there are many passive sentences. In this translation practice,by analyzing the examples with the guidance of the Skopos Theory put forward by the German functionalist school, the translation methods both at the lexical and the syntactic level are summarized. For terminologies, diction, amplification, and annotation are adopted. For the passive sentences, conversion of the voice, sentence components, sentence patterns, and addition of the logical subject are adopted. In this translation project, the translator summarizes the translation methods that will be used in translating popular science related to art, hoping to provide some ideas and methods for translating such text in the future. |
