A Practice Report On Chinese-English Terminology Translation Of Tunnel Engineering From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This is a practice report on C-E translation.The ST is an academic monograph in tunnel engineering,Research and Engineering Application of Grouting Mechanism of Rock-Soil Mass in Complex Strata,which consists of seven chapters and about 80,000 words.The monograph has many professional terms and a high degree of professionalism.In addition to translating Chapters 2 and 3,the author of this practice report is also responsible for the coordination of terminology translation for the entire project.This report focuses on the translation methods and standardization of tunnel engineering terminology,which is of theoretical and practical significance to the translation of tunnel engineering academic monographs.This translation practice attempts to explore the translation methods and standardization of terminology in tunnel engineering academic texts from the perspective of Skopos Theory.German functionalist Vermeer’s Skopos Theory and its rules(skopos rule,Coherence rule and Fidelity rule)provide theoretical guidance for technical term translation.The three rules of Skopos Theory not only define the standards that translators should follow,but also help realize the communicative function of technical English translation.The purpose of the translation of terms in this academic work is to enable the target language readers to accurately understand the theory and its applications.For different types of terms,adoption of different translation methods can better achieve the purpose of term translation.The translation practice shows that the combination of transliteration and literal translation to engineering mechanics terms,literal translation to construction terms can achieve the standard of accuracy by the guidance of skopos rule;inversion to engineering mechanics terms,conversion method to geological environment terms can reach the standard of systematization by the guidance of coherence rule;affixation and literal translation to engineering mechanics terms,literal translation method to geological environment terms can achieve the standard of conciseness by the guidance of fidelity rule.Through the above effective terminology translation methods,the degree of terminology standardization can be improved,the standardization and industry consistency of terminology translation can be ensured,and the target language readers can quickly and effectively acquire professional knowledge.
