Abstract/Summary:
The core of this article is actually to explore the male identity and its related body image and masculinities in films by the feminist director Pedro Almodóvar, which is very important but often neglected in the study of film theory.Through the investigation of socially constructed masculinity to “identify” the gender of men, which also confirms the position of female identity in gender relations on the other hand. The gender relationship and rights discourse between women and men are generated in the correspondence and reference between the two,and the discussion and emphasis on either side alone will fall into a bias centered on this gender. Therefore, when the article analyzes the films by the feminist director Pedro Almodóvar as a sample,it considers men, women, and even multiple gender identities, and uses R.W.Connell’s Analyze model to explore the concrete manifestations of male characteristics in different identities, bodies, and social history. In Masculinities(1995),for the first time, she divides masculinity into four types: “Hegemony”,“Complicity”,“Subordination” and“Marginalization”.As a representative of contemporary Spanish films,Pedro Almodóvar’s sufficient care for women and marginalized groups in his images has made him one of the forefront of feminist film creation. However, what location does the director put them to when he is in dealing with the complex relationship between the sexes and even the multiple gender identities? What kind of gender discourse does he stand for in characterization? And,in addition to men,how are masculinity constructed and actually operated in women and queer groups? The first part of the article defines the relevant concepts involved in this research, and through combing the current research status at home and abroad,it provides a richer data aid and theoretical reference for this article.Including masculinity and related theoretical context,Pedro Almodóvar’s director research status, and analysis of Almodóvar films based on masculinities research status.Starting from the director, the second part of the article introduces the content of his creative environment, social history and cultural background,so as to observe its direct influence on the director’s image creation, which also contributed to the formation and even proficiency of Almodóvar’s gender concept. The third part of the article sorts out the specific characters in Almodóvar’s films, shows the characters with “Hegemonic masculinity”,and discusses the external and internal operating mechanism of “Hegemony” in men.The fourth part tells about what is shown in the film as a reflection of the above“Hegemony”,the masculinity of the dominated males show a kind of damage and the“congenital” defects of masculinity, they are in order to compensate and become“Qualified men” and show a kind of “Complicit masculinity”.The fifth part explores the “drift” of masculinity in the physical identity of men and women in the movie: men lack and completely lose masculinity, while women show masculinity. The sixth part of the article specifically discusses the “Subordinate masculinity” of the queer group in Almodóvar’s films, and analyzes the “Marginal masculinity” embodied in individual gay men with special identities. In the last part, the article focuses on the overall macro grasp of the masculinities in Almodóvar’s films, and enlightens the director’s value standpoint in gender writing and generalizes his unique gender writing strategy.
