Sculpture is a material-based discipline,and works are born from materials.Soft scul Sculpture is a material-based discipline,and works are born from materials.Soft sculpture is not only the result of the expansion of materials by traditional sculpture,but also reflects the diversified artistic practices of creators.Following the development of sculpture in the twentieth century,the article explores the origin of soft sculpture works and focuses on soft sculpture works in the 1960 s.This article will discuss the external formal characteristics of soft sculpture and the "rebellious" spirit and cultural significance behind its works based on their creative purposes,selected materials and expression methods based on their specific works.The first chapter discusses what is soft sculpture? This paper expounds the artistic background of soft sculpture from the perspective of soft materials’ involvement in sculpture.With the exhibition "Eccentric Abstraction" in 1966 as the starting point,artists’ creation methods and concepts are also changing quietly.Thesis chapter ii combined with soft materials in the art form has carried on the concrete analysis,points out the soft materials under the action of gravity to the horizontal dimension of expanding breaks the traditional sculpture in the form of the modes,works in the form of "soft" explicit extension,trying to break the people for the traditional sculpture solid,strong stereotypes.In the third part of the article,three common forms of soft sculpture are discussed,and specific cases are combined to analyze how artists express their "rebel" spirit through the "softness" in their works.This chapter analyzes Oldenberg’s soft sculpture works,fabric works in space and the wrap works of Christo and His wife at the early stage of their artistic career,sorts out the artists’ creative intentions and summarizes the rebel significance of soft sculpture after its formal features.From the artists for the use and treatment of soft materials,to the specific implementation of soft sculpture works,no matter what the artists for the purpose of creation;Regardless of the genre of the work,the artist’s use of soft materials implies a certain consistency that clearly expresses a cultural stand against reason,against rigid geometric form,and against the raw emotion that is so conspicuously lacking in sculpture.The internal consistency makes soft materials popular among different art schools and constructs the language system of materials themselves.The work of art itself has determined that all materials have the opportunity and equal aesthetic value to be expressed in the field of art.
