Jules Bastien-Lepage is one of the most influential realist painters in France at the end of the 19 th century. In the period when people’s vision gradually changed from realistic painting to impressionist painting,Lepage is known as the last banner of French realism in the 19 th century through his adherence to realism.Lepage’s realistic painting has unique aesthetic value and artistic expression. He went up against the trend of the times, full of local feelings, insisted on "art for civilians",paid attention to social reality, focused on the rural style, and objectively recorded the living conditions of French countryside and farmers in the 19 th century; In his works of art,he has a unique style different from the realist painting masters Courbet and Miller, which reflects the naturalistic view of respecting nature, pursuing truth and longing for truth. He makes a pure and objective realistic description of rural scenery and character activities, and has become the leader of the naturalistic art movement,In addition,he absorbed and integrated the style elements of neoclassicism and Impressionism in his artistic creation.Through the integration and recreation of diversified styles,he formed Lepage’s unique and groundbreaking external plein-air naturalistic painting.Lepage’s unique naturalistic painting of exterior light has had a far-reaching impact on the development of farmers’ theme painting and rural landscape painting.Although the art circles at that time had different opinions on this new art form, the theme, tone and representative square stroke method in his artistic creation were studied and imitated by many artists, especially the British painter George Clausen,Henry Herbert La Thangue,Stanhope Alexander Forbes;Australian immigrant painters,Heidelberg painting school and Chinese local oil painting. While absorbing and inheriting the naturalistic painting of Lepage’s external light, these artists combined their own artistic ideas, retained their own painting mode, developed this integrated art form to a new height, and played a positive role in the development of world art.
