After the wave of the French Enlightenment in the 18 th and 19 th centuries, some French painters began to abandon the feudal tradition of political, religious and mythological subjects and transposed the scenes of ordinary working people’s life and labor as well as the radiant and splendid natural scenery into their artistic creations.Jules Bastien-Lepage and Leon Augustin Lhermitte were the representative painters of 19 th century French rural painting.Through their subtle observation of daily life and careful design of the narrative language, they used simple and calm brushwork to celebrate the glory of the working people’s humanity and their infinite reverence for nature.Their paintings are distinct from the "exposing","rebellious" and "provocative" characteristics of critical realism.Having absorbed the strong humanistic feelings, attachment to the homeland, idealized aesthetic rules and realistic expressions in the paintings of Lepage and Lhermitte, the author combines the traditional narrative painting language with the new elements of rural themes that are of concern to him nowadays, and at the same time,he has continuously explored and thought about them in the creation of rural paintings.
