| Kao-shih t’u is a landscape painting of the Five Dynasties. Its technique is both ancient and traditional, combining the landscape style with the actual scenery of Jiangnan, making its overall appearance different from the landscape painting model of the Five Dynasties at the end of the Tang Dynasty, and thus highly researchable.Firstly, this paper compares the background of the creation of Kao-shih t’u with historical documents and authoritative writings, and points out the close relationship between the establishment of its theme and the source of its techniques with Li Yu.Secondly, based on the practical perspective and the author’s creative experience, this paper analyzes the painting from the surface to the inside and from the macroscopic to the microscopic level, from the information revealed on the surface of the painting to the characteristics of the painting itself, starting from the five main aspects of tree, stone, water, architecture and figures. At the same time, the painting’s techniques are linked to other works of the Tang,Five Dynasties, and Northern Song dynasties, and are combined with relevant literature to demonstrate and complement each other, and then analyze its special style and specific expressions that fuse the North and South and follow the Tang and Song dynasties,so as to conduct a preliminary overall study of the painting and clarify its technical lineage in order to determine its position in the history of Chinese landscape painting. Finally,by summarizing the intrinsic characteristics of Kao-shih t’u,I have distilled its distinctive features in terms of painting materials, techniques, and concepts, and formed some important approaches to painting practice. And these results are incorporated into the author’s creation, interpreting practice with theory. |
