A Report On The E-C Translation Of Children Of The Age Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

This translation practice chooses Chapter One to Chapter Four of the English version of Children of the Age by Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun as the source text of English-Chinese translation practice.Children of the Age was first published in Norway in 1913.In 1924,its English version translated by J.S.Scott was published in America.This novel reflects the conflicts between aristocrats and peasants against the backdrop of the rise of industrial civilization and the decline of agricultural civilization.Skopos theory derives from German functionalism translation theory in the 1970 s.It takes translation’s objective as the prime rule in the translation process by adopting appropriate translation methods and concentrating on the needs of the target readers.The thesis adopts the three rules of Skopos theory,namely,the skopos rule,the coherence rule,and the fidelity rule,to guide the English-Chinese translation practice of Children of the Age.Under the guidance of the skopos rule,the translator chooses the methods of repetition,amplification,and omission.Under the guidance of the coherence rule,the translator chooses the methods of conversion,division,and inversion.Under the guidance of the fidelity rule,the translator chooses the methods of negation and the change of voices.The thesis analyzes the practice of translating the English version of the Norwegian novel Children of the Age into Chinese under the guidance of Skopos theory,which not only promotes the spread of this novel in China but also provides evidence of the feasibility and effectiveness of applying Skopos theory to literary translation.It is hoped that the thesis can offer a reference for future novel translation practice.
