| China has joined hands with other countries to promote infrastructure,such as railway,roadway,bridge,and dam.During international cooperation,technical specifications as the basic guidelines on the construction of a project will not only matter a project’s safety,but also show the national technical level.Therefore,the translation of technical specifications is of worthy significance especially when studies on the Chineseto-English translation of technical specifications in the hydraulic engineering field can hardly be found globally.This paper is based on Technical Specification for Concrete Dam Safety Monitoring assigned in December,2019.The author translates the fifth,sixth,seventh,eighth chapter and Appendix C as required to convey the information accurately and understandably to the receiver.That means translators should know the differences between the two languages and take the target reader’s language environment into consideration.Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory,the author mainly discusses translation methods and techniques from two aspects.At the lexical level,three translation techniques are summarized to deal with technical words,fuzzy words,and auxiliary verbs,respectively finding equivalents combined with partially free translation,clearly defining the context and concepts of fuzzy words and matching the exact modal verb.At the syntactical level,conversion,division of long sentence and adoption of fixed sentence are suggested to better align with English reading habits.The author hopes this paper will provide some guidance for future technical specification studies. |
