This practice study report is based on an excerpted part of Technical Specification for Foundation Treatment and Dam Works of Ertanggou Reservoir. The translation practice belongs to civil engineering English. As a branch of English for science and technology, civil engineering English is strongly professional and highly practical. Not only does precise translation provide convenience for engineering project, but also bring great profit for the company. The report attempts to discuss the practice of Chinese to English translation of civil engineering under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory. According to language function, Newmark divides texts mainly into three types:the expressive-function texts, the informative-function texts and the vocative-function texts. And civil engineering English, full of technical terms, long sentences, non-emotive expressions and passive voice statements, has the features of informative-function. When translating, on the one hand, the translator should pay much attention to faithfully expression of the source language; on the other hand, the translator should bear the target readers in mind. The report can be divided into four parts. The first chapter describes translation task, including the features of civil engineering English and background information of the original text. The second chapter is an brief summary of the translation process. The third chapter introduces Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory, as well as its guidance to translation task. Endowed with informative function, the translation should be reader centered and target language oriented. Meanwhile, the author proposed that accuracy, expressiveness, smoothness and straightness might be principles in translation. The fourth chapter is case analyses. It not only sums up problems that appeared during translation, but also brings forward translation suggestions and skills with a number of examples.
