A Study On The Translation Of Specification Documents Of Controller From The Functional Equivalence Theory

The rapid development of science and technology has promoted not only the progress and development of human society,but also the evolution of automation technology.Meanwhile,the exchange and cooperation between China and other countries in various areas have been ever increasing,particularly in the field of automation.As a consequence,the workload of Chinese translation on the specification documents of automation controller has increased accordingly,and the requirements for the translators have become higher.The key to the translation of specification documents of controller is to convey the original information as faithfully as possible.Functional equivalence theory,which regards dynamic equivalence as the fundamental,can help the translators choose proper translation strategies and realize the function of specification documents of controller.By taking examples from a Chinese version of S7-200 SMART System Manual,this paper discusses key points of the translation of specification documents of controller from lexical,syntactic and textual perspective.Specifically,the lexical part discusses such translation methods as literal translation,addition and free translation used in professional terms,nominal phrases,abstract nouns and phrasal verbs;the syntactic part deals with such translation methods as omission and re-translation used in compound sentences,passive sentences and non-finite clauses;the textual part focuses on how to achieve discourse cohesion and coherence smoothly.Based on such discussion,this paper further puts forward some translation strategies for specification documents of controller,in the hope that it can provide some reference and help to improve the efficiency and quality of the future translation practices.
