A Translation Report On E-C Translation Of Once Upon A China (Excerpts) Through MT+PE Method

The rapid development of software technology continues to bring new machine translation models,as a result of which machine translation is increasingly improved.However,constrained by its mechanicalness and the complexity of human language,most machine translation still cannot meet the requirements of language service industry.In view of this,post-editing that can effectively correct machine translation errors has gradually become a hotspot of the industry.“Machine Translation+Post-editing” pattern gives full play to the advantages of machine translation and manual translation on the premise of ensuring the translation quality,so as to improve the translation efficiency and reduce the translation cost,making it the mainstream of the language service industry.The author practices MTPE pattern to translate Preface and Chapter One of Once Upon a China,an informative text introducing ancient and modern Chinese architecture and stories behind it,through Sougou Translate and full post-editing.The machine translation by Sougou Translate is analyzed under the guidance of Multidimensional Quality Metrics model and the problems summarized from the four metrics,namely accuracy,fluency,verity and terminology,include untranslated and mistranslated proper nouns,mistranslated common words,term errors,illogical compound sentences,complex citations and incomplete information.In accordance with the above error types,specific post-editing methods are as follows: consulting authoritative sites and parallel texts in the field of architecture,selecting correct meanings of common words according to context,resorting to term bases and searching syntax,reorganizing sentence structure to clarify its logic,referring citations back to their sources and adopting annotations to supplement implicit information.The report summarizes error types of machine translation by Sougou Translate and specific post-editing methods.The report can provide reference for translation practice of similar texts,and can contribute to consolidating the existing achievements of MTPE pattern.
