| As a cornerstone that comprises the core literacy of the English language subject,English language proficiency is indispensable for fostering the growth of students’ awareness of culture and the quality of their thinking. It is composed of five language competences: listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing in senior high school.Among them, writing is considered to be an important output skill in high school English teaching, mainly including practical writing and expository writing. However, the current high school English writing teaching effect is limited.Krashen proposed Narrow Reading in the early 1980 s and a large number of studies have proved the positive effect of this strategy on learners’ language acquisition. In view of this, this study takes practical writing and expository writing as examples, guided by Narrow Reading Strategy, based on theories such as Reading to Writing Theory, using tests, questionnaire survey and interview to probe into the following two research questions through teaching experiments:(1)Are there any effects on senior high school students’ writing? If yes, which genre of writing is influenced more by the Narrow Reading between practical writing and expository writing?(2)Are there any differences in the effects on senior high school students’ writing? If yes, which level of students is influenced more by the Narrow Reading in their writing between high level and low level? This experiment was carried out in a middle school in Nanchang city,Jiangxi Province. Two classes of senior two were selected to conduct this research, lasting one semester. The experimental class uses a PRERW mode that combines Narrow Reading Strategy with high school English writing, including pre-reading,demonstrative reading, targeted exercises, circular reading, and writing while the controlled class adopts the Product-oriented Approach to teach the writing class, following the four steps:familiarization, controlling training, instructing writing and free writing.Subsequent to the experiment, the writers presented a comparison of the test results, questionnaire results, and interview results utilizing SPSS 26.0 software. The study found that Narrow Reading Strategy heightened students’ enjoyment of and belief in English writing, and students were more willing to go on using narrow reading strategy in their subsequent learning.Concretely,in the first place, the Narrow Reading Strategy shows a favorable influence on students’ English writing and strengthens their English writing skills, including improvement of writing scores and composition quality.Secondly,Narrow Reading Strategy have promoted students’ practical writing ability more than expository writing ability.Thirdly,Narrow Reading Strategy have promoted the English writing level of low-level students more than high-level students. In furtherance, this paper has some recommendations and inspirations for future teaching and research. |
