Abstract/Summary:
With the continuous development of economic globalization, more and more medical products are flooding into the Chinese market, and international exchanges and technical cooperation are becoming increasingly intimate. In international communication,English,as the world’s common language, plays an increasingly important role and builds a bridge for the world economy. The manuals of technical products and their instructions are also playing an increasingly prominent role in international communication and cooperation. In particular, the translation of medical device manuals has a significant impact on users’ safety and their willingness to purchase, the accuracy and standardization of its translation directly affect the effectiveness and practicality of medical devices in clinical use.At present, academia has achieved fruitful results in the translation practice of medical device manuals, but the summaries of translation experience of such texts are still relatively abstract,so they need further refinement. This report selects the Associate II System Design Specification as the source text,it is a manual for ophthalmic medical devices produced by the Dutch Ophthalmic Research Center(D.O.R.C.).The author analyzes its linguistic characteristics at the lexical, syntactic, and textual levels in this report, and carries out translation practice under the guidance of Skopos theory. With the aim of proposing corresponding translation strategies for the translation difficulties encountered in this kind of manual,in the hope of providing a reference for similar translation practices. The key points in the translation of the source text include:(1)At the lexical level, the source text contains a lot of terminologies from the medical device industry, some of which are derived from common vocabularies but are given specialized meanings, and another lexical feature is the use of a large number of abbreviations;(2)For the syntactic level, the source text makes extensive use of passive sentences, using them to make an objective and scientific expression of the operating steps and avoiding the subjectivity. In addition, there are some compound sentences in the source text, and the structure of the compound sentence is complicated, and often contains multiple clauses and multiple layers of connections(3)For the textual level, the source text is professional and normative and has an extremely strong logic. These difficulties above bring great challenges to translation practice. After translation practice, the author found that:(1)For the translation of medical device terminologies, the translator should adopt the translation strategy of literal translation or literal translation combined with free translation, while the abbreviations should adopt the strategy of zero translation or mixed translation;(2)The passive sentences should adopt the strategy of linear translation or adverse translation according to the different contents of the source texts. The compound sentences can be translated by the strategy of simplifying the logical structure to express the meaning of the sentence more clearly and straightforwardly;(3)In order to reflect the cohesion and coherence of the source text in the translation, the translator adopts the strategies of reference and syntactic integration,to integrate the logically interrelated components into one.
