The author conducted simultaneous interpreting in the forum on“Historical Connection of China-ASEAN Ethnic Culture”,the sub-forum of the 5th China-ASEAN Ethnic Culture Forum(CAECF).The forum was held in Guilin on December 3rd,2020.Many scholars from China and beyond delivered keynote speeches at this forum.The author provided simultaneous interpreting services for three scholars,one from Malaysia and two from China.The task thus included both Chinese-English and English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting.This is a report on the simultaneous interpreting in the sub-forum mentioned above.Based on the analysis of transcripts of the interpreting task and post-interpreting reflection,the author found that the challenges of this task were mainly brought by English phonetic variety in Malaysian speech,speeches without drafts,high-density information,and high-speed delivery.Therefore,the author carried out a comprehensive analysis of the typical cases according to the Effort Model and the Interpretive Theory of Translation.Then,the author discussed coping strategies,including extra-knowledge accumulation,terminology mnemonic enhancement,deduction,amplification,explanation,paraphrasing,generalization,and omitting.The author hopes this report can serve as a reference for interpreters or students encountering similar challenges. |
