| Grace Boynton,a senior foreign teacher in Yenching University,had a close relationship with John Stuart,Liu Tingfang,Bing Xin,Yang Gang and so on.When she came back to America,she wrote the novel the River Garden of Pure Repose,which elected Chinese Garden as an unique aesthetic object.It has become a typical example of exchanges and mutual learning between different civilizations.However,for a long time her value had been underestimated.This paper is divided into three chapters to discuss Grace Boynton’s literary activities based on her journals and archives.Chapter One,centered on Grace Boynton’s teaching activities,systematically sorts out the specific subjects,guiding papers,teacher-student relationship and educational philosophy in order to examine the practical process of the female missionary’s dissemination of western literature and culture;Chapter Two focuses on Grace Boynton and Bing Xin,Yang Gang,Xiao Qian ’s literary associations to reveal the potential influence of Western Literature and Christian Culture on Students in the Gap between Politics and Individual Thoughts of the Times.Chapter Three focuses on Grace Boynton’s novel and explores how Grace Boynton has been negatively influenced by oriental literature and culture in her long-term local experience.From dialogue,consultation,and then to identity,Grace Boynton had gradually taken Chinese culture as a mirror and consolidated or reconstructed her self-worth in a broader geographical space.Cross-cultural experience had provided inspiration and material for Grace Boynton’s writing.Filtered and distorted Oriental poetics had also appeared "presence" in her thoughts and works.The conclusion part makes a more accurate evaluation of Grace Boynton’s merits and demerits of her activities in China by reviewing her life as a female educator and missionary. |
