A Report On The Translation Of The Best American Mystery Stories 2019

This report is based upon the E-C translation practice of The Best American Mystery Stories 2019.The Best American Mystery Stories 2019 is a collection of 23 short mystery stories.The stories in it were selected from more than 500 mystery stories published by American and Canadian writers.The Best American Mystery Stories 2019 is without Chinese version yet.Open House and Coach O in this report are selected from The Best American Mystery Stories 2019 for the translation and analysis from the perspective of "ThreeDimensional Transformation" principle in Eco-Translatology.Open House and Coach O involve factors of culture,language and communication.So it’s unavoidable for the translator to take these factors into consideration in the process of translation.EcoTranslatology holds that the translator should pay attention to the integrity of the translational eco-environment.And the translator should give full play to the translator’s subjective initiative,make adaptive selections from the linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions after adapting to the translational eco-environment so as to ensure the ecological balance between the original text and the translated text.In the linguistic dimension,the translator should pay attention to the differences in the linguistic forms existing in the source language and the target language,thus make adaptive selections at two levels: lexical level and syntactic level.In order to ensure the transformation of information in the source language while enhancing the readability of the translated text,the translator makes adaptive selection and transformation on the linguistic forms of the source language by mainly adopting the translation strategy of domestication and adopting various translation techniques such as conversing part of speech,combining and splitting sentences,deleting redundant sentence components,adding sentence opponents,paraphrasing.In the cultural dimension,the translator is fully aware of the cultural differences between the of the source language and the culture of the translated language and make adaptive selection and transformation at cultural dimension so as to ensure the transmission of cultural connotations in the original language.In dealing with the culture-loaded words,the translator flexibly combines literal translation and annotation within the text to provide the background information and transmit the cultural connotations of the original language.In disposing of the translation of some idioms,the translator uses translation techniques of paraphrasing to retain or substitute the cultural images in the original language.In the communicative dimension,the translator pays attention to the communicative intent of the original text and strives to convey the psychological activities,emotions and attitude of the characters by using the translation techniques of addition and paraphrasing.The report aims to explore the feasibility of the "Three-Dimensional Transformation" in the translation of mystery stories.In this report,the analysis of some cases and examples from the translation are presented at linguistic,cultural,and communicative levels and translation techniques are summarized.
