A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Johnson & Johnson’s 2020 Health For Humanity Report—Progress In Sustainability(Excerpt)

The translation task is an excerpt from Johnson & Johnson’s 2020 Health for Humanity Report-Progress in Sustainability.The excerpt is composed of two parts,the first part is an introduction to Johnson & Johnson’s response to COVID-19;the second part describes its innovations in medical devices,pharmaceuticals,public health,and its achievements in HIV prevention and treatment.The translation is aimed at helping target readers to learn about innovations in global healthcare industry and promoting exchanges between practitioners in the same field both at home and abroad.According to text typology theory,the source text is an informative text.The problem for translation is how to ensure the readability and logical coherence in translation,the challenge of which lies in syntactic and context levels.On syntactic level,some sentences in the source text are long and complicated in structures;on context level,logic in the source text is usually achieved in English ways;and there exist logic differences between English and Chinese,for instance,important information in English usually comes at the beginning of the sentence for emphasis.The above challenges make it difficult to achieve readability and logical coherence in translation.With above problems in mind,related literature has been searched and read through and adaptation theory has been found applicable to solve the problems.According to adaptation theory,pragmatics is actually a continuous process of language choices because language has three properties: variability,negotiability,and adaptability.Adaptation theory highlights that translation should adapt to sentence structures and logical cohesion in the target language.Guided by the strategy,to ensure readability and make translation conform to the reading habits of Chinese readers,division and inversion are adopted as translation methods to translate the complicated sentences.To produce logic in the translated text,logical conjunctions and adjustment of logical order are applied to make the translation adapt to Chinese logic.
