The source text for this translation practice is selected from Chapter 9 of The Development of Modern China’ s Economics: A Research on the Dissertation of Foreign Students, which focuses on the doctoral dissertation of Chen Huan’ chang,a doctoral student, discussing the ancient Chinese economic thoughts embedded in Confucianist thoughts.Based on the language function, source text is known to be informative. It opened up a new horizon in the history of modern Chinese economic thoughts. In the process of translation, classical Chinese, the terms related to ancient Chinese economics and Confucianist thoughts are translation difficulties. It is found that the three rules of the Skopos theory, namely, the Skopos theory, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule, can be well adopted to the selection of translation methods and techniques and ensure the adequacy and faithfulness of translation. For the translation of classical Chinese under the coherence rule, the translator adopts the translation techniques of annotation and combination. The annotation can supplement the information related to ancient Chinese historical figures, while combination reorganizes the short and loose classical Chinese sentences to make the translation more consistent with the English expression. For the translation of Confucianist thoughts, the translator mainly employed the translation method of liberal translation and paraphrasing.Liberal translation converts the expressions of the original text and seek the equivalent metaphor in the target language so that the information of the source text can be conveyed simply and directly; The translator paraphrases the expressions with Chinese characteristics in order to make the translation better understood by the target readers, which conforms to the Skopos rule. For economic terms in ancient China, the translator adopts paraphrasing and literal translation methods to supplement their background information, and at the same time distinguish them from the modern concepts of economic terms to help target readers better understand the connotation of the economic terms in ancient China, which is consistent to the fidelity rule.Through this translation practice, the translator has greatly improved the translation ability and enriched knowledge in economic development in ancient China.Meanwhile, the translation of such academic texts is of great value for Western scholars to learn the development of Chinese economic thoughts, which is conducive to the international community’s in-depth understanding of China’s economic development over thousands of years and demonstrates the contribution of Chinese economic thought to the world’s economic thought civilization.
