A C-E Translation Practice Report On Xi Jinping’s Seven Years Of Educated Youth(Part One) Guided By Skopos Theory

The report is based on the present author’s translation practice of the first section of Xi Jinping’s Seven Years of Educated Youth--“educated youth’s talk”.The aim of this report is to conduct a tentative study on the translation strategies of interview texts using Skopos theory as a guide.The theoretical basis of this report is Vermeer’s Skopos theory.Skopos theory includes three rules: skopos rules,coherence rule,and fidelity rule.Among them,the skopos rules take precedence over the fidelity rule and coherence rule,which means the skopos rules have priority.The present author first analyzes the obstacles faced in the translation process in the report.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,the related translation strategies are outlined in the report.Xi Jinping’s Seven Years of Educated Youth is an interview text with strong Northern Shaanxi characteristics.Three main translation difficulties are encountered by the present author.They are the translation of Northern Shaanxi dialect,Chinese four-character idioms,and political terms during a special historical period.The translation strategies of transliteration plus note and free translation are used for the translation of the Northern Shaanxi dialect under the guidance of Skopos theory.To cope with the translation of Chinese four-character idioms,the present author employs free translation,literal translation,and omission in accordance with Skopos theory.From the perspective of Skopos theory,literal translation plus note and amplification are adopted to solve the translation difficulty of political terms during a special historical period.The purpose of this report is to conduct a preliminary exploration of the translation strategies of interview text using Skopos theory as a guide.The present author hopes that the culture of Northern Shaanxi will be spread during the process.
