| This report, based on the C-E simulated consecutive interpreting of the speech"Tao Te Ching,a Book of Life",has analyzed interpreting difficulties, concluded corresponding solutions, and reviewed the interpreter’s performances. This speech was addressed at Wuzhen Cultural Lecture Room by Bai Yansong,CCTV journalist and anchorman, who pays close attention to social issues. In this speech, the speaker mainly discussed his views on certain ideas in this book and related them to his own life and social phenomena. The interpreter chose this material due to her interest in Taoism and her wishes to introduce it to more international friends and improve her comprehension of cultural interpreting. The whole process of the simulated interpreting has been recorded and transcribed for better analyses. The interpreter has applied the Interpretive Theory into composing the report.According to this theory, there are three stages in interpreting:comprehension, deverbalization, and reformulation. It believes that conveying meanings is of great importance, which is exactly required in cultural interpreting,so this theory can be adopted to guide the report. The author has analyzed the speech to categorize difficulties:culture-loaded expressions, redundancy, semantic fuzziness, and unclear logic, all of which can cause burdens of understanding and then reformulating in the target language. To address those issues, the author, guided by the Interpretive Theory, has proposed four solutions:amplification, explicitization, omission, and restructuring,so as to achieve the accurate, efficient, and clear transferring of meanings. To better illustrate, the author has provided some examples. The author considers this report and the practice an opportunity of studying Tao Te Ching and traditional Chinese culture. It also helps to polish up her interpreting skills, better analyze difficulties and find solutions. Moreover, the author hopes that this report gives other interpreters a glimpse into cultural interpreting. |
