A Study Of E-C Translation Strategies Of English News From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

With the development of the information age,English news is playing a vital role in transmitting cutting-edge knowledge and the latest trends.E-C news translation plays a bridge role in the communication between China and the international community.With the increasing degree of foreign exchange in China,the demand for E-C news translation is also increasing.The research of E-C news translation strategies under the guidance of proper translation theories is of great practical significance.Nida’s functional equivalence theory holds that translation is not merely literal equivalence or formal equivalence,but functional equivalence between two languages.It emphasizes that the response of the target readers to the target text is basically the same as that of the original readers,which is consistent with the purpose and standard of English news translation.Therefore,this thesis selects functional equivalence theory to explore effective strategies for E-C news translation.This thesis selects two pieces of news form the The Washington Post series “ 2 ℃ :Beyond the Limit” as translation materials.This series of groundbreaking reports won the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism in 2020.The reporters of The Washington Post collected a large amount of information and data,and clearly presented the terrible impact of climate warming on the earth in a scientific way to call on readers to pay attention to climate change.Based on the in-depth analysis of the lexical,syntactic,textual and stylistic features of the source text and under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,this thesis discusses how to flexibly and organically combine liberal and literal translation,the two basic translation strategies advocated by linguistic school theorists,for the purpose of accurately and fluently reproducing the information of the source text,and simultaneously achieving lexical,syntactic,textual and stylistic equivalence.The specific methods and techniques include transliteration,omission,annotation,shift of part of speech at lexical level,linear translation,shift of ingredient,conversion of voices,reconstructing at syntactic level,structural copying,amplification at textual level,and common wording,reproducing the original rhetorical features at stylistic level.The translator hopes that this thesis can provide some new samples for the study and application of functional equivalence theory,and at the same time,provide reference for E-C news translation under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.
