| Nowadays news plays a more and more important role in the modern society.People come by copious information through newspapers, television, internet and so on.More attention is paid to the political news because it is closely related with nation and people. This present study is a report on my Chinese translation of 12 English articles on political news downloaded from China Daily inews web. With the guidance of functional equivalence theory by Nida, the author analyzes the linguistic features of English political news and finds that many proper nouns, political terminologies and numbers are used in political news and constructions of English news are unusually long, complex and the writing styles of the articles are also varied;the differences between English and Chinese makes it unlikely to keep complete equivalence of translation. Some typical examples cited from the translation practice illustrates how the author dealt with these differences.Translating English political news is to meet the requirements of information dissemination and cultural communication. The functional equivalence theory emphasizes that content is more important than form, which means translators need not stick to the form overly but keep the equivalence in content. This viewpoint is just consonant with purpose of translation of English political news when source-text readers and target-source readers have the identical reaction to the texts. Therefore, sometimes it is necessary to give up the form equivalence of the text to guarantee complete information connotations which it delivers.Nida’s functional equivalence theory applied to English political news translation not only provides the theoretical support but also the translating thinking way for translators.Dialectically applying the translation theory into practice is conductive to enhancing translation. The author hopes this practice report would offer some reference to the novices who just enter translation field. |
