Abstract/Summary:
The author selected for translation Shelf-life Management Program: Program Administration,a guidebook-type logistics management manual developed by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition,Technology, and Logistics, which is a document in the field of equipment and materiel management and was last revised in 2016.This manual implements policy, assigns responsibilities, and provides procedures for the shelf-life program to identify and manage items which have deteriorative characteristics and to mitigate the risk of shelf-life expiration. The translation of this manual into Chinese can provide information reference for the shelflife management of military materials in China. The Functional Equivalence Theory consists of four principles, namely, lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence, textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence. The principles of the theory require the translation to accurately convey the information of the source text from semantics to style, which is in line with the characteristics and translation standards of the guidebook-type texts. In view of this, the author chose to translate Shelf-life Management Program: Program Administration,a typical guidebook-type manual, under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory, summarized some effective translation techniques to achieve lexical, syntactic, textual and stylistic equivalence in the process of translation practice, and wrote a translation practice report on this basis.Through translation practice,it is found that lexical equivalence can be achieved by adopting annotation, amplification and specialization;syntactic equivalence can be achieved by adopting division and voice conversion;textual equivalence can be achieved by adopting repetition and amplification;stylistic equivalence can be achieved by using formal wording and reproducing imperative mode. The author uses these translation techniques to achieve functional equivalence between the target text and the source text. The author hopes that this translation practice report can enrich the material for the study of the translation of guidebook-type logistics management manuals,esp.shelf-life management documents, and,at the same time, provide some reference for related domestic translation studies.
