A Comparative Study Of Heroic Characters Of Beowulf And Jangar

An epic is the embodiment of the culture in a region,reflecting the social phenomenon and people’s lives in a historical period thoroughly.At the same time,the images of heroes in epics reflect the common values of people in this region,and the promotion of their spiritual qualities can promote the development of society.Epic Beowulf and Jangar,are the typical representative epics in the West and China.The hero Beowulf and Jangar share the same excellent characteristics and different values,which fully reveal the characteristics of the figures and the objective reasons for the different cultures between the West and China.The paper adopts the archetypal criticism theory of comparative analysis.It exclaims the similar characteristics of heroes from three aspects,such as the noble identity of heroes,the outstanding and excellent abilities of heroes,and the fighting spirit of heroes.And then it explores the different views of heroes from the view of nature,the view of “the principle of pursuing the greater good and shared interests”,the views of friendship,the views of governing a state and the life values of a person in five points.At last,it reveals the reasons for different values of heroes between the west and China in five dimensions: the marine and grass cultures in the geographical environment,the values of individualism and collectivism,the thoughts of force or ethics in politics,and different ideas of good faith.Both Beowulf and Jangar have the characteristics of the nobility and extraordinary.They can uphold justice with bravery.Although they have different attitudes to the world in different regions,the outstanding characteristics of heroes are still worthy of being learnt by people.The different thoughts of heroes come from the objective conditions of the environment.The common characteristics of human beings should be the common values to pursue both the western and Chinese people.Therefore,it’s helpful to build a community with a shared future for mankind in the conception of “ to appreciate the culture of others for the human civilization”.
