| Based on local archives,periodicals of the Republic of China,local chronicles of Qingdao and related works,this paper studies the afforestation activities in Qingdao from 1922 to 1937.On the basis of previous afforestation achievements,Qingdao government continued to carry out afforestation activities during the Republic of China.Compared with other local afforestation activities in the same period,Qingdao has made some achievements in terms of afforestation area,survival rate of new afforestation and public participation.The afforestation activities in Qingdao during the period of the Republic of China were the result of the joint efforts of many parties.First of all,thanks to the attention paid by the Qingdao government to afforestation activities,the government has provided institutional and financial support for afforestation activities by establishing agricultural and forestry offices,sorting forest police,formulating forestry laws and regulations and Afforestation Planning,and allocating forestry funds,which has strengthened the government’s management of Qingdao’s forestry administration.Secondly,the establishment of forestry schools and the promotion of afforestation activities by different ways of publicity.Thirdly,the specific practice of afforestation activities in Qingdao during the Republic of China directly affected the development of afforestation activities.After selecting seeds and raising seedlings,the agriculture and forestry office carried out various forms of afforestation activities,such as expanding forest area,planting street trees and building park green space.At the same time,it strengthened the management and protection of afforestation achievements from four aspects: forest protection and fire prevention,pest control,preventing illegal cutting,thinning and pruning,and forest dressing.Compared with the afforestation activities carried out during the German occupation and Japanese occupation,the afforestation activities in the Republic of China paid more attention to the construction of scenic forests and private forests,and the afforestation sites were expanding from urban areas to rural areas,with the increasing participation of the public.In the period of the Republic of China,the afforestation activities in Qingdao had some shortcomings in forestry scientific research,but the results were undeniable.It has not only improved the ecological environment of Qingdao,enriched people’s daily life,but also promoted the development of Qingdao’s tourism industry.During the period of the Republic of China,the development of afforestation activities in Qingdao was not only the process of improving Qingdao’s municipal construction,changing citizens’ ideas and improving urban infrastructure construction,but also the process of promoting Qingdao’s urban modernization and changing Qingdao’s original urban image. |
