In the current context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict,Russia-Europe relations have plummeted and energy relations between the two sides have almost come to a end, with the EU announcing the complete phase-out of Russian energy around 2027 and Russia cutting off several gas pipelines to Europe. In order to analyse the role played by the United States in Russian-European energy relations and to explore the future of Russian-European energy relations, this article first reviews the formation and development of Russian-European energy relations, which have continued to develop despite constant obstacles.Secondly,an in-depth analysis of the reasons for,and specific ways in which, the US intervened in Russian-European energy cooperation in the post-Cold War period is presented. The US chose to impede and sanction RussianEuropean energy cooperation for four reasons: its overall strategy of containment against Russia, its concern for European energy security, its desire for European energy markets and its geostrategic considerations, and to achieve its intervention goals in three ways: by expanding the sources of European energy imports,by undermining energy cooperation between Russia and Europe, and by enhancing European and American energy cooperation. The US intervention in Russian-Ukrainian energy relations is characterised by the division of Europe and the prioritisation of American interests over European ones. The US intervention has only had a delaying effect on RussianEuropean energy cooperation and cannot stop it completely.Although RussianEuropean energy relations are currently at a freezing point,in the long term they are likely to recover again due to their geographical proximity, the existing basis for cooperation between the two sides and the development of renewable energy sources.
