Future time perspective is a personality trait that leads to behavioural tendencies based on an individual’s perception and experience of future time,and individuals with greater future time insight are more able to look ahead,adopt more rational learning strategies and perform better academically.According to socio-emotional choice theory,individuals’ motivation to pursue goals is mainly influenced by their perception of time,and both intertemporal choice propensity and academic procrastination are phenomena that occur in the time dimension.Therefore,this study investigates the relationship between future time perspective,intertemporal choice propensity,academic procrastination and academic achievement from the perspective of junior high school students’ time perception ability,with the aim of providing educational countermeasures and relevant theoretical supplements for improving junior high school students’ academic achievement.This study was divided into two parts;the first part used psychometric method,through the Future Time Perspective Questionnaire for Middle School Students,the Academic Procrastination Scale for Middle School Students and the Interterm Choice Task to measure and collect data on the future time perspective,intertemporal choice propensity and academic procrastination of 915 junior high school students in Hebei Province,and collected the examination results of the three main subjects of the students’ latest examination,and standardized the mean scores were used as a quantitative indicator of academic achievement,and then the data results were tested and analysed using the Process plug-in of SPSS;Study 2used a qualitative research method to interview 20 junior high school students through a selfadministered semi-structured interview outline,and the results were coded,word frequency analysed and clustered using Nvivo software.Based on the above studies,the following conclusions were drawn.1.there are significant differences in the demographic variables(gender,only child or not)of future time perspective,intertemporal choice propensity,academic procrastination and academic achievement among junior high school students,with girls having significantly higher future time perspective and academic achievement and girls having significantly lower academic procrastination than boys;only children have significantly higher intertemporal choice propensity than non-only children.2.The predictive effect of future time perspective on academic achievement of junior high school students was significant,and future time perspective could influence academic procrastination and hence academic achievement of junior high school students through the tendency to make inter-term choices.3.In the interviews,it was found that future time perspective positively predicted academic achievement,and stronger future time perspective could avoid academic procrastination and increase academic achievement by reducing the rate of delayed discounting in intertemporal choice. |
