| This is an English-Chinese translation report and its source text is selected from a book of fashion history named Dressing Up: The Women Who Influenced French Fashion.The book contains a large number of historical facts,covering clothing,history,culture,and politics.It is an informative text,in which the author describes the relationship between the development of French couture fashion and rich American women in the 19 th century.The translation characteristics of informative texts are faithful to the source text and adhere to the principle of accuracy and smoothness.The translator adopted Newmark’s communicative translation theory.Based on this theory,the translation practice translates Chapter Six,Eight,Nine and Ten of the book.And this report first briefly introduces the selected book and its author,as well as the significance and overall structure of this practice report.Then,the report mainly sums up the difficulties the translator encountered in translation,analyzes the representative translation examples and proposes the effective solutions.The difficulties in this translation practice include proper nouns,common words,attributive clauses,long and complex sentences with historical facts,cohesion and coherence at the lexical,syntactic and textual level,respectively.In order to solve the above difficulties,the translator employs the methods of annotation,semantic selection and extension at the lexical level so as to reach an explicit expression.In terms of the syntactic level,the translator deals with English attributive clauses by means of combination and transforming clause pattern.As for long and complex sentences,methods such as linear translation,recasting and reversing are used.Through these methods,the translation can be rendered more logical and smoother.At the textual level,the translator employs the methods of substitution and adding conjunctions to achieve cohesion and coherence of the translation.Through this translation practice,the translator not only captures the relevant history of French fashion in the 19 th century,but also understands the characteristics of the historical text of fashion.Besides,the translator has a better grasp of translation skills.Finally,the translator expects that this translation practice will provide some guidance for the translation practice of fashion history and enable Chinese readers to understand French couture fashion from two new perspectives: America and female,that is wealthy American women promoted the growth of the French fashion industry though ordering French couture garments continuously and the smuggling,theft,illicit copying and tariff policy in America exert great influence on French fashion industry. |
