A Report On The Translation Of Mao Zedong’s Great Contribution To The Formation And Establishment Of The Party’s Ideological Line Of Seeking Truth From Facts

The history of the Communist Party of China is a subject that studies the development history of the Communist Party of China.With China’s growing role on the international stage,it’s necessary to make China known better by the world.The translation of the Party history texts is of great significance for telling Chinese stories well,spreading Chinese ideas,enabling the international community to understand the CPC comprehensively and objectively,and creating a more favorable external public opinion environment.The translator has analyzed the three aspects of vocabulary,sentence and discourse,and summarized the specific translation strategies under Newmark’s Text Typology theory.According to Newmark’s Text Typology theory,it’s found that the Party history texts mainly have two types of text functions: informative and expressive.In translation,semantic translation and communicative translation strategies can be used alternately.Specifically,in terms of vocabulary,the original text contains a large number of personal names,organization names,culture-loaded words and repeated words.At the sentence level,sentences without subjects,long sentences and sentences in classical Chinese appear frequently.At the textual level,the discourse cohesion is invisible and multiple topics are often contained in one paragraph.The specific strategies are as follows: 1)Translate institutional names and culture-loaded words by transliteration with annotation or literal translation with annotation;use omission or substitute to translated repeated words;handle the translation of personal names in accordance with the Implementation Instructions on Using Chinese Pinyin to Spell Chinese Names and Place Names as the Spelling Method of Roman Alphabet.2)Add formal subjects,turn active voice into passive voice or add subjects to translate subjectless sentences;find out the trunk sentence and add auxiliary elements to build tree-structured English to translate long sentences;follow the sequential order from intralingual translation to interlingual translation to translate sentences in classical Chinese.3)Add connectives to make discourse conform to the characteristics of English overt cohesion;divide a multi-themed paragraph into several ones to deal with the translation problems at the textual level.In a word,the Party history texts have unique language features.This paper discusses relevant translation strategies,hoping to provide reference for future translation of the Party history texts.
